Background

Population-based surveys have been carried out at five-year intervals since 1972 in Finland. Here we report the extent to which type 2 diabetic individuals achieved their treatment goals in the FINRISK 2012 study.

Methods

In 2012, a sample of 9905 25-74-year-old persons was drawn from the population register. The participation rate in the health examination was 59%. The methods used in the health examination as well as in the laboratory analyses followed international recommendations. Laboratory analyses were carried out in the National Institute for Health and Welfare. The Finnish Current Care Guidelines were used to determine treatment targets.

Results

In those with type 2 diabetes (n=347), the median HbA1c was 6.0% in women and 6.1% in men. Of the individuals with type 2 diabetes, 80% of women and 74% of men met the glycaemic target of HbA1c less than 7%. The blood pressure target, which was less than140/80 mmHg, was achieved by 46% of women with type 2 diabetes and 36% of men. The LDL cholesterol target was less than 2.5 mmol/l. Of type 2 diabetics, 43% of women and 64% of men achieved this target.

Conclusions

The glycaemic control target was achieved by the majority of the individuals with type 2 diabetes. However, significant proportions of type 2 diabetics did not reach the blood pressure and LDL cholesterol treatment targets.
